In this blog, you’ll get a detailed walkthrough of the Black Series HQ19 flagship caravan. This caravan is ready to join you on all your adventures by providing you with the best quality and class without breaking your budget.
The Exterior
Overview
The exterior of the HQ19 caravan includes:
- LED flood lights
- Aluminum composite body
- Skid guards
- Exterior shower
- Expandable awning
- 5 x Dual-pane tinted windows
- 4 x Stabilizer legs
- 2 x Outdoor speakers
At the front of the caravan
This part of the caravan has been built with downward and reverse angulations at the bottom to deflect rocks, dirt, or mud that might be kicked up during your off-road drive. By deflecting these objects, it helps keep your towing vehicle in pristine condition.
Just like other Black Series caravans, the HQ19 has two front compartments to store some necessities. In the compartments you will find:
- Propane storage: This compartment will fit two 20 pound tanks with floor ventilation in case of any leaks.
- Secondary storage: This compartment has a bracket that will hold two five-gallon jerry cans and other accessories.
As you move down from the two front compartments, you will find the handbrake. This is perfect to use when you’re hooking up or detaching from the towing vehicle, but we highly recommend you also use some wheel chocks to lock everything in. Beside your handbrake, you will find two power cables:
- A 7-pin connector that hooks up to your running lights and turn signals
- A two-pronged 50amp Anderson plug, this is used if you have a secondary solar panel that needs to be plugged in
In front of the cables and handbrake sits our Black Series articulating hitch and Y connector. This articulating hitch will give you 70 degrees of rise and 360 degrees of rotation, perfect to get through any type of rough roads during your adventures. To ensure a secure connection, this caravan also has two heavy-duty connector chains to help catch the caravan if it ever drops. Finally, in this area, you can’t forget about our 10 “ swing away jockey wheel. To learn more about the jockey wheel, check out the video below.
Around the sides of the caravan
The first thing you’ll notice when you come to the side of the caravan is the large windows and storage compartments. But hidden away is an extendable awning. This awning can extend out up to eight feet, giving you an ample amount of shade on those hot summer days.
Looking into the exterior compartments of this caravan, there are some key features that we would like to highlight:
- Compartment #1 (near the front): This is a pass-through storage that can be accessed on either side of the vehicle. Also found in this compartment is a built-in water level to assist you when setting up your caravan.
- Compartment #2 (near the front): Pull-out kitchen. This kitchen is equipped with two prep tables (one large and one small), a three burner propane stove with an electric start, a sink, and a utensil drawer.
- Compartment #3 (toward the rear): Fold-out prep table. This can serve as a multipurpose table and extra space if you need it.
- Compartment #4 (near the center on the driver’s side): Exterior shower. This is perfect if you want to rinse off any mud, dirt, or sand before heading inside.
Continuing along the side of the caravan, is the door. This is built with a detachable screen door and equipped with a tri-lock system that prevents the top and bottom from getting loose. Getting into the caravan is easy, as the HQ19 is equipped with motorized steps that fold out and as well as a porch light that provides visibility when you come home at night.
Beside the door, heading to the rear of the caravan you will find the two marine grade exterior speakers. Just below is compartment #3 which contains the fold-out prep table, it also resides under the awning, perfect for when you’re relaxing in the shade. Moving to the corner is the black water tank, this is where the hose will attach when you’re emptying out your black and grey water at the dump station.
On the other side of the caravan is the location for the water tanks. From left to right you will have the drinking water tank, general water tank, and city water connection. Just above that is the vent for the refrigerator inside your caravan.
Moving down this side you’ll see the furnace vent, hot water tank, and a 30amp plug. This caravan uses a six-gallon propane run hot water tank. The final thing you will find on the driver side of the caravan is the pass-through storage that we mentioned earlier, but on this side of the compartment you will also find the breaker panel.
At the rear of the caravan
You will find:
- LED tail lights
- 2 x full-sized 265/75/16 spare tires
- 2 x 9000-pound recovery hooks
- Dump station with separate black and grey tank dumps
Underneath the HQ19 Caravan
Underneath is our heavy duty 265/75/16 off-road tires. You can also find the strong independent swing arms, heavy duty coil springs and the limiting chains, all aspects that help you reimagine your destination and get you to where you want to be.
Next to the general suspension, this is where we store the 50 gallon general water tank and 16 gallon drinking water tank. The general water tank is responsible for providing water to your showers, toilets, and sinks, whereas the drinking water tank pumps through a triple filtration system before getting to your cup.
The Interior
Overview
Stepping into the caravan there are a few key features, they include:
- Full-sized queen bed
- Adjustable table that can be converted to a lounge bed
- Full-sized fridge
- Standard camping oven
- Separate toilet and shower
- 24” TV
- 2 x speakers
Aside from the features, the interior cabinetry is made from a Malaysian honeycomb timber built to be ultra-light weight yet luxurious at the same time.
Sleeping area
Entering the caravan, you will step into the bedroom area with a full-sized queen bed and plenty of cabinetry around the ceiling and sides of this space. On both sides of the bed, there are two reading lights perfect to use when you’re winding down before heading to sleep. At the base of the bed, is a very vital appliance for those in colder climates, the furnace. This caravan is equipped with a 16,000 BTU furnace to keep you warm on those colder nights.
Looking at the overhead cabinet on the farside of the caravan you’ll see it contains some wires and plugs attached to the TV. Next to this cabinet is the antenna controller, this is how you will adjust your antenna to get your favorite stations. If you continue on the ceiling you will find the first of two speakers in the interior of the caravan. Heading forward a little is the hatch, which has a couple of awesome features such as LED lighting, a bug screen, and a privacy screen.
Kitchen
Starting at the end of the kitchen area, you’ll find the thermostat control that is connected to the heater found under the bed. Moving down in the same area is where the TV is mounted. This 24” TV is equipped with a DVD player, perfect to play your favorite movies. A bit further down on the side of the cabinet is the thermostat control connected to the general water tank. Next to it you will find a GFI plug, please note that these plugs will only work off your 30amp service and not your inverter.
Continuing on in the kitchen there is a microwave which will only work when the inverter is turned on. Below the microwave on the countertop resides your sink. On the sink faucet there are two levers, the large lever on the top controls the general water and the small lever on the side activates the drinking water tank. In the cabinet beneath the sink, you’ll find the mixing valve alongside the triple filtration system.
Following along the counter there is a large prep area, when the lid is flipped up it reveals a three-burner stove which is perfect for making your favorite meals. Underneath the stove is a standard sized camping oven. And to store all your food and necessities, there is plenty of cabinet space throughout the kitchen as well as a pull-out pantry that will fit cans, spices, and other small goods perfectly.
To find the command center in this unit, simply look in the upper left cabinet just above the stove area. This command center controls a number of different things:
- Breakers for the various appliances
- Switches for the general and drinking water pumps
- 4 x gauges for the water tanks
- 2 x switches that control what source the water heater is drawing from
- A mini display that shows how much voltage, current, energy, and power is being brought in and used by the caravan
This caravan also has a full sized dual zone fridge and freezer. To adjust the temperature in this fridge, the control panel can be found in the freezer portion. In the cabinet underneath the fridge is the storage for the various water pump hoses.
Looking up above the refrigerator on the ceiling is the air conditioning system. To use this system, you’ll need to open the vents on the front, back, and sides. The controls on this are quite simple, one knob will adjust the thermostat and the other will activate the air conditioning or fan.
Restroom and shower
When entering the restroom, the first feature you will notice is the sliding door. This pocket door helps separate the restroom area from the rest of the caravan. On the back of this door are two stainless steel towel racks. Moving into the restroom, you will see a standard toilet, as well as a washing machine. This seven-gallon washing machine may be small but it is perfect for cleaning smaller garments such as socks and underwear.
As for storage in this space, there are three storage cabinets mounted on the wall, great for storing your towels, extra toiletries, or anything else you need to bring. In addition, there are several drawers underneath the sink as well. The big backsplash on this wall is a mirror, with an additional vanity mirror on the side next to the light switches. The sink in this bathroom is a beautiful and large porcelain sink which gives a luxurious feel to the space.
On the left side of the restroom, is the shower. The shower door in this unit is an accordion style attached to a track to prevent water from leaking out to where it’s not supposed to be. On the ceiling is another lit vent to remove any steam and prevent you from showering in the dark.
Dining area
On the opposite side of the kitchen is the dining area. Overhead there are more cabinets to store your belongings. Down at the end of these cabinets is the radio, this is where you will be able to control your interior and exterior speakers. Above that is the Ames power satellite and inverter switch please note the power saver auto is purely used by technicians only.
Beneath your cabinetry in the dining area is where you’ll find three main switches:
- Flood light switches
- Interior light switches
- Cutoff switch
Next to these switches there’s another reading light that activates via a touch button.
The seating area can be used as a lounge bed or dining table. To lower or raise the dining table there is a clamp on the side:
- To raise: Gently pull the clamp to release the table and slowly raise it to its upright position until it locks in place
- To convert it to a lounge bed: Gently pull the clamp to release the table and slowly lower it to its bed position until it locks into place
To utilize every inch of space in this caravan you’ll find the sides of the dinette seats flip out and works as a leg rest for extra comfort, if needed.
Under the seats is where the inverter and batteries are stored. On one side of the seat is the inverter and the other is where you’ll find the batteries. On the batteries there are also several fuses and a charge controller to prevent the unit from over charging it’s batteries.
